The Bar Council of India (BCI) and the Center have embarked on a 10-year plan to promote legal education in Hindi and other Indian languages, marking a major step towards making legal education accessible across the country. The project aims to promote multilingual legal education and ensure that English continues to function as an important national language and an international legal language.The discussion took place at a meeting held by the Legal Affairs Department under the Ministry of Law and Justice in collaboration with the BCI. According to the government statement, this is part of the government’s Viksit Bharat 2047 vision and aims to improve access to justice through legal education.
Experts discuss the way to study law in many languages
The meeting was presided over by Justice Rajendra Menon, Chairman of the Military Court and Chairman of the Standing Committee on Legal Education. It brought together government officials, Vice-Chancellors of leading law universities, members of the legal profession, legal experts, Bar representatives, and students.Held under the theme “Strengthening Legal Education through Integration of Regional Languages,” the conference focused on developing a strategy for mainstreaming Indian languages in legal education in a gradual and systematic manner.How can this change be achieved while keeping legal education quality and accessible to students of different languages? Promote a bilingual approach
According to the government, the legal education system is bilingual and multilingual. Although English will continue to be an important language for national and international law, the use of Indian languages is expected to improve legal understanding among students.Officials believe the move will also strengthen legal aid, medical law training and help future lawyers better prepare for district and lower courts, where regional languages are widely used.The process is expected to follow measurable and verifiable standards to ensure that all law enforcement agencies are aligned.
Technology is expected to play a major role
The conference also highlighted the role of technology in accelerating the integration of Indian languages in legal education.Artificial intelligence translation tools, digital legal databases, clear legal terminology were some of the topics that the students came up with to facilitate the availability of accurate legal information in various Indian languages.The officials felt that such technological advancements would go a long way in making legal education better and more reliable.
The National Declaration and Steering Committee has been issued
As part of the discussions, the conference worked to prepare a National Note on Indian Languages in Legal Education. It also suggested setting up of a National Steering Committee to be chaired by the Law Department and the Bar Council of India.The committee will manage the implementation of the plan, monitor the plan and ensure that the 10-year plan is implemented step by step.After successful implementation, this idea can change the legal education system in India by creating an environment where the education system will be inclusive, will help access to justice and help future lawyers to study and practice law in English and Indian languages.
